Tampere Region’s model of the regional circular economy concept is nominated for an International Award

Tampere Region’s Model of the best regional circular economy concept for cities, companies and citizens is nominated together with 14 other cities in Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation. 301 valid entries were submitted for the award by 171 cities from 59 countries and regions.

The Guangzhou Award rewards innovative initiatives for the city development. The innovations should improve the socio-economic environments in cities and regions, promote sustainability, and hence advance the livelihood of their citizens. The innovation submitted by Tampere Region is a model that connects public operations, enterprises and citizens in waste management.

- The model of Tampere Regional Solid Waste Management is based on managing value chains of the waste management starting from waste production to recycling, recovery and disposal. Sustainable solutions are ensured by overall management of the public operator when it comes to logistics or waste management solutions, says Mr. Harri Kallio, Managing Director of Tampere Regional Solid Waste Management Ltd (Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto Oy).

- The model is based on strong, open and fair partnership between public and private sector, e.g. Tampere Regional Solid Waste Management Ltd. invites private transport companies to tender for the waste logistics, and altogether 25 transportation companies are working in collaboration with Tampere Regional Solid Waste Management company. Moreover, there are also several partners dealing with waste management and recovery.  The public operator is obliged to organize the waste management in the most efficient and sustainable way, says Mr. Kallio

The concept of Tampere Region has now been acknowledged among 15 best initiatives of sustainable development. Other finalists come from cities like Addis Abeba, Boston, Jakarta and Copenhagen. In early December it will be resolved whether the concept of Tampere Region is the best.

The entry for the Award was submitted together with City of Tampere and EcoFellows Ltd.
